It turns out that progress is painful sometimes. Ubuntu is not shy about changing how things work. I've used 2 scanners in the last few weeks and both required a work-around. For xsane or gscan2pdf to find my scanners I had to sudo them.
sudo gscan2pdf
Well of course that's not the right way to do it, so I started searching. I spent way to long searching and finding junk --lots of UDEV rules that you have to get "just right". When really what you want to do is tell HAL.
